Default Dash light problems

Hey I am a new owner of a 1997 Eddie Bauer Expedition. It has 183,000 miles on the 5.4L. It has a couple issues that I need to figure out. I thought that this would be the best place to ask first.

1. Neither the dash lights or the illumination for the climate control light up. The overhead console does light up and work with the dimmer switch. Everything on the dash works just no illumination. Also the autolamp feature does not work either. Checked all the fuses and they are all good. Not sure where to start checking next.

2. When the truck is switched into AWD the light just blinks. Seems to go into 4x4 high/low just fine. Any thoughts?

I now my way around a multi-meter. So any test I need to perform shouldn't e a problem. Thanks in advance for any help.

Check fuse 2 for instrument cluster, and fuse 4 for autolamps. This is for the inside fuses, under steering wheel. Also, fuse 18 in the same location.

Another EDIT: ....and fuse 29. Actually this one might be it, since it shares both items. Same location.

I checked all the fuses and they are good.

With the multimeter, check voltage between the back of the fuses (you know how fuses have those 2 little exposed squares?) while they are pluged in and ground.

I'm guessing these fuses are not hot all the time, so when checking the instrument cluster ones (2, 18, and 29) have the headlight switch in parking or headlight position. For the autolamp fuse 4, turn the switch to autolamp mode, though just make sure it's dark enough where they would normally turn on.

This is to see if you are getting voltage here. If you are, then should be in the wiring after the fuse box. If not, then it might be in the wiring leading to the fuse box. Not sure if that made sense...

Are the fuse in the cabin gonna be the sub fuse? Meaning that the fuse will be after the switch?

Not sure, don't have the wiring diagram for a 97. I think pre switch.

If you figure or figured it out, can you tell me what you did to fix the no dash light problem and climate control lights? Thanks
