ABS Light and rear differential speed sensor

Finally got around to replacing the rear differential speed sensor for the '98 Navigator (4x4).

First off, the Chilton Manual doesn't do a very good job with explaining where it is or tools needed to get the job done.

With that said, I finally located the rear differential speed sensor. It sits on top of the rear differential. It sounds like a simpe replacement, but it's tricky trying to get to the sensor anchor bolt.

I can't remember now, but I think I used a 10mm socket to undo the bolt that holds the sensor down. You can't see it directly if you're lying down. You just have to feel for it and then place the socket over the bolt.

It helps to jack up the driver side of the truck high and its easier getting to the sensor from the rear on the driver's side of the rear differential.

Once you remove the bolt and are able to loose the sensor, be prepared for a foul smell. That's the rear differential fluid. That's normal that it smells bad.

Reverse the order for installation and that's it.

It solved my ABS light problem and the money I saved going to the dealership can be applied to more useful things (like an MP3 player!)

Okay, part numbers.

These parts apply to the 5.4L engine with AC (260 HP).

The rear differential speed sensor Ford part number is #F85Z-2L373-AC.

The alternator I went with was from Napa Auto Parts.

Part #66344

It's a normal 12V, 130 Amps. You can go to the FORD dealership to get an alternator as well, but if will probably be more expensive. If you need to replace the alternator, this is your chance to upgrade to something with higher amperage. Of course, you'll also need to upgrade the wiring to handle the extra amperage.

I didn't bother to upgrade because I'm just running everything stock, though if you are running a high wattage stereo, this might be a good idea.
