    2009 fix or sell?

Agree with Max78. If trans cannot be repaired inexpensively, I would look to a used trans. These transmissions tend to last a long time. I have almost 300,000 on mine with zero issues.

    2009 fix or sell?

Its already been said but Ill say it again. It depends on the overall condition of the truck, specifically any accident history or rust issues? Barring those, your truck has relatively low miles but a series of mechanical issues that can easily be remedied. The transmission issue is a...

    Oil leak?

The gasket between the oil filter housing and the engine block is a known leak point.

    Engine swap

I have the 5.4 2 valve and three valve and I can assure you that the two valve engine is the most reliable engine that has been installed in any expedition. The only issue possibly is spark plug blowout. Keep your 5.4 2 valve, change all every 5000 miles, replace the spark plugs and torque...

    2003 overheating?

Is your coolant clean or is it a chocolate milkshake color? Assuming it clean and compression check verifies good head gaskets, then I would hook up a obd scanner and read the coolant temperature under live data. That will tell you if it’s overheating. If you want to start throwing parts at...

To service the transmission, or not service the transmission? That is the question.

I would not be worried about the transmission fluid age at 10 years old and only 55,000 miles. Moving forward let the visible condition of the fluid be your guide but I would change at 100,000 if not done before. You can do a pan drop and fill which is about a 30% change. I do a complete...

    Procharging the 5.4

Your connecting rods are the weak link on that engine. Apply boost at your own risk. Could get more expensive unless you upgrade them.

To service the transmission, or not service the transmission? That is the question.

I am a ASE technician and the original owner of my 2001 Expedition XLT. My Expo has about 300,000 miles. I have performed a complete transmission fluid exchange (12-14 qts) with Valvoline Maxlife ATF and filter swap every 100,000 miles and getting ready to do the 3rd swap. Transmission...

    2009 fix or sell?

2wd or 4wd? I’m guessing your expo has more than 150,000 miles. A suspension rebuild, alignment, complete timing job with oil pump and a transmission replacement will cost at least $8000, more if 4wd. A quick search of NADA value for a 2009 expo Eddie Bauer 4wd with 150,000 miles in clean...

    Drastic drops/returns of oil pressure (5.4L 3v 2009)

First off the oil pressure gauge indicates normal mid range at 7 psi so it’s pretty much useless as a indicator of good oil pressure. May want to look into mechanical gauge hook up to verify your concern. My guess is at 190,000 miles, your timing chain guides have started to break apart and...

    Timing chain - bare minimum?

With 315,000 on the chassis and engine mileage unknown, its too worn out to bother. Just sell it as is and move on. It will be hard sale with those real miles. Now if it had 106,000 miles it would be totally worth it to invest the time and money.

What to look for when buying a gen 1 expy

Has the heater core been replaced yet? Since we are talking 20 year old cars here, if it hasn't been done at some point you can pretty much plan on it giving up soon. Complete dash removal. When it starts leaking depends on how well the cooling system was flushed and kept clean the last 20 years.

2005 Expedition timing chain kit replacement. Can a (fairly capable) newbie do it? (moral support thread)

It sounds like you are a capable guy so I would ask 2 questions. 1. Do you have a decent place to work on it and 2. Do you possess patience when working on mechanical things? With all the information available to do this job, it really a matter of following directions carefully. I did this job...

Why is the cam phaser rattle bad?

If you want to avoid the repair and help save your engine just utilitize “flood mode” by holding the gas pedal to the floor and cranking the engine 5 seconds or so to build up oil pressure in the phaser. After cranking for 5 seconds or so just take your foot off the gas and it will start...

How many years has a 2001 XLT model lasted?

I am the original owner of a 2001 Expo XLT 4.6 2wd.Purchased in October 2000 and currently has over 250,000 miles. Original engine, transmission. Oil changed every 5k, trans flush every 100k, coolant flush every 30k. Water pump and ac compressor replaced out of abundance of caution at 220,000...

    Engine seized

No doubt. Doing maintenance generally does not result in increased resale value. The question I was posing was “what car can be purchased these days for engine replacement cost on the expo”? Would it be reliable? Would this expo with a new engine be reliable? Depends on condition. My...

    Engine seized

Depends on the overall condition of the car. Any accident history, condition of paint and interior, do the other systems work? If the answers are positive, then I would at least consider it, especially given how much would you spend to replace the car…

    Keep it or scrap it?

What more input are you looking for?? Folks have chimed in and basically said that it’s worth it in todays car market to have it repaired, provided the rest of the car is sound. I responded and said that the the repairs your car requires are normal for that generation expedition and it’s...

    Hancock tires

I have a 2001 Expedition so take this for what it is worth. Michelin LTX tires. The car has close to 300,000 miles and it’s only on its 3rd set of tires since new. I average 100-110,000 miles on each set. I would say they they are worth the extra money..

    Keep it or scrap it?

All expeditions in the 2004-2013 ish age range will need the repair your car is facing. For some expos that repair happens at 100k, yours came at 200K Not bad. With repairs in place, you can reasonably expect 300-400k from that engine. It’s a 200,000 mile car so expect other small issues to...

    Rebuilt Motor still has P0011

Based on your write up and the diagnostic code, it seems the engine timing is off on bank 1 which is passenger side. Do you have a warranty? It appears the crankshaft / camshaft timing is off and may need to be be re done.

Rusted out brake line blew today

Have you thought about just cutting out the rusted area and patching the existing brake line? Many YouTube videos that show how to do it. Nickel copper (NICOP) brake line material can be easy bent and formed by hand.

    A warning…

Totally feel your pain. Absolutely opt for the cast iron ratcheting tensioner‘s. I installed the cast iron tensioners 5 years ago when I did the timing job on my sons 08 f150 and it’s totally silent to this day. Still have the “improved” Ford plastic tensioners new in a box in my shop but one...
