My 2019 FX4 has developed a ticking sound in the front left wheel well. After searching it seems that the sound may be coming from the High Pressure Fuel Pump. Does anyone have any experience with this? If I replace the lifter that drives the pump and the pump will the sound go away?

HPFP failure on these gen 2 engines is super rare. Ive never seen it actually. It will always make a loud noise when engaged and actually pumping. Which is not all the time like gen 1. Most noticeable on a cold start. If it goes away after 15-60 seconds after a cold start first thing in the morning (will be longer if very cold) then it’s normal. At idle it will occasionally cycle on and off but typically stays off once warmed up.

It’s a roller tappet set up under the pump. I replaced the roller sleeve and gasket when I replaced my valve covers after doing the cam phaser job. Just make sure the cam lobe is down/flat when you reinstall. Make sure you go in with new bolts as well because they have locktite from the factory and they can get brittle when heat soaked. Follow the factory torque sequence. You’ll need a factory repair manual (there’s links floating around the forums) or just pay Alldata for a one month set up. You can get all the parts for dirt cheap from your local dealer long as your not replacing the whole pump.

Ford will tell you to replace the flange nut fuel line as well, but I’ve never replaced it and I’ve never had a leak and I’ve had it off a few times.

Also, something to be aware of on these, is if your hearing more knocking noises than normal, extremely worn cam phasers can make noise even when the engine is running. But you’ll know if that’s an issue if you have the famous cold start rattle.

So after listening with a mechanic stethoscope and watching the arm on the driver side turbo waste gate I believe the ticking sound is not the HPFP but the flapper on the turbo waste gate. It rattles shortly after start up all the time. I ordered just the flapper on eBay, and am going to attempt to replace it. Looks like I would have to purchase the whole turbo from Ford.

You’ll be going down a rabbit hole with the watergate rattle. You’re better off just putting the spring mod on it and leave it be. I buy a pair of springs from my local hardware store about every 6 months and keep them fresh. Every 2nd gen EB I have worked on has rattle from the waste gate. Ford says it’s normal. And the looseness ensures no binding in the linkage. I would not recommend taking the linkage apart and replacing it with any type of eBay part. That looking is attached to the wastewater actuator which has to be finely calibrated and adjusted and then voltage must be verified through the PCM to ensure proper adjustment. There is a YouTube video out there showing how to do this adjustment. But the turbo has to be off the vehicle and it’s only typically used for turbo rebuilds and has not thing to do with rattle.

Attach a $5 set of springs from your local Lowe’s on there and call it a day.

Okay that’s not wastegate. It honestly sounds like a roller rocker noise, which isn’t very common on these.

Probably just time to have it diagnosed. Not much can be done over a video.

When cam phasers are really bad (the famous cold start 1-2 second rattle), I have noticed these can tick constantly at idle too. But if you don’t have the cold start noise, probably not it.

Don’t forget basics also. Oil level. 5w30 synthetic. These love the Motorcraft oil filters.

Thank you for your help

When my ram 1500 hit 80k mark, a bolt in the passenger side exhaust manifold broke off and made a very similar noise to yours at cold start. When engine was warmed up, the noise disappeared.
