2015 Expy EL limited, about 144k miles

Threw the code, after I've replaced plugs, mass air flow sensor, and air filter--was idling rough.

Dealership wants to replace both turbos with an estimate of 4800.00

Does this seem crazy high or what? Haven't seen anything online about it being 2400 per turbo, more like 1600 range per turbo....

Should I call around? We have a time crunch that may just end up being thrown out window.

4800 is a big ticket when we were trying to get this thing over the finish line another year or two, and the trade-in value keeps getting smaller and smaller.

Got the written estimate, about 4620, but also includes the diagnostic fee of 189

That P0299 is a low boost code. It can be triggered by other issues. If you didn't pull the code yourself, get a code reader and check for other codes. In my case, I get P0299 after P0019, likely due to a stretched timing chain. A turbo failure would probably be accompanied by other indicia of failure, like smoke from failed seals or noise from contact between the compressor and housing, etc. How can they say the turbo is bad without indicating which one? Are they saying both went bad at precisely the same time?

Based on the info you've provided, I don't trust your dealership. Also, labor rates vary by shop. I highly suggest calling around to other dealerships, as well as local independent shops. At a minimum, it would probably be worthwhile to get a secondary diagnosis.

A couple of years ago I was getting the P0299 code, but also an intermittent "Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit A" fault. Being the much cheaper and easier job, I first replaced all 4 camshaft position sensors. The P0299 code never came back, so may or may not have been related.

2016 Expedition XLT-EL w/130k miles at the time of the fault.

Well, in SW PA, some of the Ford dealers charge this upfront, but others do not...but one dealer I went gave me a 50% credit for it, since I had them go ahead & fix the issue I took it in for.

^^THIS^^

Around here, labor rates run about $175-250/hr at dealerships, but only $95-150 at most independent shops. Therefore I only go to the dealerships for things that require complicated diagnostics, computer/electrical issues, or internal engine repairs...routine & general maintenance goes to my local guy that I have trusted for over 15 years :)
