Can't Open Rear Door

Hi everyone...new to the forum.

My wife drives a 2005 Eddie Bauer. When I got home today she told me that she couldn't get one of the rear doors open from the outside - only from the inside. I played around with it for a few minutes but couldn't see anything noticeably wrong with it. Then I accidentally did something stupid - I flicked the child safety lock back and forth a few times and didn't realize I had set it to "lock" before my son closed the door. Now it won't open from the outside OR the inside.

So I have two questions:

1) Any thoughts on how I can get the door open so I can at least unlock the child safety lock and be able to open the door from the inside again?

2) Any thoughts on what was wrong with the door in the first place and how I might go about fixing?

try rolling down the window and wedging something between the window and door. MAYBE you could actuate the handle rod to open the door(assuming a broken ext door handle). Or try removing the door panel from the inside. Folding the seat helps a lot.
