I have a 2020 and I just had my transmission replaced. It cost me $1500 out of pocket even though I had a 3rd party extended warranty because the warranty allows for a used part when available but my dealer wanted to use a factory rebuilt with a 3yr unlimited mile warranty. The difference in price was supposedly $1K so I agreed to pay it. They also replaced the transmission cooler which was not a covered part for $500. I had a similar experience with my wifes BMW and a different 3rd party warranty provider, but a BMW engine is considerably more than a Ford transmission. In my experience the warranties are not what they promise to you when you buy it, but still a necessity in the age of $1500 tail light assemblies and such.

My new issue is a "delayed" shift from (I guess) 2nd to 3rd when cold and going slow up the street from the house. Maybe hesitate is a better word.

I really do love this truck, but I'm at a loss as to what to do. It's just such a nice truck. I think when the Grand Highlander/TX come off stop sale in August/Sept I'm going to go look and make a decision.

I would ONLY purchase the OEM Manufacturers extended warranty and only the best version they offer. There is story after story regarding aftermarket warranty's either outright denying the claim or under paying the full cost of the repair.

I have a 2019 Limited. I was having some issues with the transmission shifting rough and feeling jerky. I wasn’t sure if it was normal with the 10 speed. I took it to the Ford dealership on May 28th and a few days later they told me the transmission needs a full overhaul at 67K miles for a cost of $8,400. It’s been there ever since. I bought an extended warranty plan and they are covering about $7,400 and I have to pay the difference. I just purchased this vehicle back in December of last year. Im extremely disappointed with this and I’m heavily considering selling it. I really need some advice from my fellow owners…
I joined this forum in January 2024. There are a lot of complaints on the transmission. It kind of goes without saying, there is either a design flaw or poor production on the transmissions. I agree with the other comments, count yourself lucky you only have to pay around $1,000. I have 83,000 miles on mine and crossing my fingers on the transmission. Right after I purchased it, the alternator went out. The used car salesman sold me a "bumper to bumper extended warranty". I was not worried until I found out the extended warranty only pays $150 hour mechanic rate. Local Ford dealers charge $195.00 per hour, so I had to "eat" the difference. Over $3K I had to pay out to get it out of the Ford Dealership for an alternator. Count your blessings! Decide later to sell or not. Unless my attitude changes, I dearly love my Expedition and right now, plan to keep it. I just hope it holds up. Good luck!

Your out of pocket 3k is solely the non-covered labor charge? For an alternator? If that is the case, the total labor hours would be 66.67.

Looks like list price for alternator is $1650 (dealer charges list) so what does it take to change it on a Gen 4 (I own Gen 3s), I can’t imagine more than 3-4 hours, unless I’m missing something. How much was the bill and how much did the warranty co actually pay.

BTW, even though the Ford ESP is no longer the safety blanket it once was, I would only buy that as opposed to an aftermarket warranty product.

I had the CDF Drum replaced on our 2020 Platinum at 59,996 miles (just under the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty). It was in the shop for 26 days in May. I got lucky to be under warranty, but I wrote a letter to Ford Corporate Customer Relationship Center and the owner and general manager of the dealership expressing my frustration with Ford knowing they have these transmission issues, but will not do a recall. I recently got a call from Ford Customer Relationship to discuss my concerns. I told them I was concerned with potential repairs I will have to do in the future now that is out of warranty. They offered me a complimentary 3 year/36,000 mile extended service plan to help remedy my concerns. I had not expected them to do anything when I wrote the letter (I was basically venting). But I do appreciate their follow-up and the extended service plan, even for 3 years. We have been on a couple of long drives since the repair. All seems to be running smoothly so far. Hi ~ Can you please provide your contact info for Ford Customer Relationship? I had a transmission slipping and clunking and the deal (under original extended warranty through Ford) charged me $300+ to "tune it". 5k miles later, I'm now in a crappy after-market warranty and the transmission spiked to 250 degrees. My shop found metal in the fluids, etc. and said I need a full replacement. The extended warranty company found a 63k mile transmission, shipped it out, shop installed it - also bad. Now I'm waiting on my 3rd transmission. This is horrible, and I've been without my 2018 Expedition for over 5 weeks and have had to cancel 2 family trips. It's my only vehicle, so it's also affecting work. This is horrible... and the original Ford repair shop 100% flubbed the diagnosis and repair at 98k miles. Regardless, they are all Ford parts and all bad. Thanks in advance.

I went old school too and mailed a hard copy letter to the Ford Corporate Customer Relationship Center in Dearborn. That generated a phone call to me from one of their Customer Relationship reps (Sandra Longoria Fortner). I was actually impressed that Ford reached out directly by phone to talk to me about my transmission issue. 4000 miles since the repair in May. The Expy is still running smooth.

Welp, 52k mi on mine and its in getting a new valve body. I had a few "Shift Sys Fault" codes a few weeks ago, and a little bit harsh shifting, and this is what they want to do first. Sure hope this isn't the start of the downward spiral of issues. It's just so insane to me, such a critical component failing so quickly in these, and I feel kind of lucky, like mine lasted longer than quite a few folks on here. Are modern warranty issues and labor costs going to kill of an iconic american brand soon? Kinda feels like it.
