July 9 I was t-boned on the passenger side, they’ve just now (7/19) decide it’s a total loss. I had a 2019 max XLT. My expedition protected me and held up well, I wasn’t even sore. Now the questions I have are, do I buy another of this gen or go older? Or newer? I need to stay around 36k so I can’t go too new. I also don’t want cam phaser issues, so what year was that not an issue anymore?

Tough call........Look at ones within your price range and request a car fax report and dealer report using the Vin number if not satisfied with car fax report. You may get all the info for the vehicle that has been worked on by Ford Dealers. Good Luck.

AFAIK, the cam phaser issue is fixed when they replace them. 2018 is when gen4 started, and is the first year with the 2nd gen 3.5 ecoboost and the 10 speed slushbox... in your price range, you're probably looking at a XLT 2019 or 2020 with higher mileage. late last year, we paid almost $50k for a 62000 mile 2019 Limited Stealth that was in perfect like new condition inspite of the mileage, and had a full CPO warranty from a dealer. We saw several XLT's in the mid $30s with similar mileages, but we wanted the HD tow package, and a few other things the XLT's we saw didn't have. Oh, a non-4x4 would probably be cheaper, we only looked at 4x4s because I use it for towing, and often dry camp and have been in places where it was too easy to spin one back tire trying to pull the trailer out of a funky campsite, plus we occasionally like to explore some offroad destinations (without the camper)

Sorry for your loss, but hooray for the protection an Expy provides, so glad nobody was hurt :)

As for your next one, I would stay in the same generation, which should keep you in the ballpark price range.

But as always, some things to consider:

A) CarFax & dealer's reports - scrutinize them carefully for any bogus nonsense or serious repairs/replacements/accidents... However, be aware that many repair shops do NOT report their work to CarFax or similar agencies, so there's a chance that some things have been done to the vehicle that nobody knows about.

B) Inspect, investigate, reinspect, preferably by a trusted shop/mechanic that knows Fords pretty well.... and make sure that the seller is willing to take a deposit while giving you a week or 2 to have someone check the vehicle for issues.....this would be less of a concern if buying from a ford dealer, even so - trust but verify !

C) If you can get an ESP for a reasonable price, it would probably be worth it, since major repairs on Expy's (or any car) can get real expensive real fast....most shops nowadays charge ~$175-300/hr just for labor, regardless of the age of the vehicle or what needs to be done....

Last year, I took my 011 EL in for it's annual state inspection/emissions tests, and found out the right exhaust manifold was warped & leaking, which made it not pass the emissions test.... the only way to fix it was to cut the header, the bolt heads & studs off (lots of torch/drill/tap time), drill the holes out, and insert new studs before attaching the new header.....

Without my ESP, this would have been a ~$4K repair, but I only had to pay the $200 deductible :D

Be patient and shop around. We picked up a 21 recently for $36k out the door. Immediately got the ESP. We've been extremely happy with both decisions. Its past the cam phaser era, but not the transmission woes (100% sureI have neutral out issue, and 99% sure CDF is bad).

I wanted to stay with the same model version I had and ultimately had to bite the bullet and spend way more than I wanted. In my case I needed the heavy duty tow package and of the several hundred available for sale in my area there were only 3 that had the HD tow.

Happy to hear you're ok after the accident.

If you need MAX size then, your best bet would be to stay with the expy. If not, you could also take this opportunity to check the broader market.

We had a Volvo XC90 T6 inscription before our expedition max Platinum and it beats the expy in every categorey except size. Better comfort, safety, performance, tech/features, mpg, dealer customer service. Even rear trunk space is good with third row down and still not bad with third row up. We're likely going to downsize back to it when we can.

This. You can get I to a cx9, mdx, xc90 or telluride for about 36k for a moderately used unit

I will say this though, the xc90 rides nice on air springs, but without it, is def not as comfy as the expy.
