Sorry for your loss, but hooray for the protection an Expy provides, so glad nobody was hurt
As for your next one, I would stay in the same generation, which should keep you in the ballpark price range.
But as always, some things to consider:
A) CarFax & dealer's reports - scrutinize them carefully for any bogus nonsense or serious repairs/replacements/accidents... However, be aware that many repair shops do NOT report their work to CarFax or similar agencies, so there's a chance that some things have been done to the vehicle that nobody knows about.
B) Inspect, investigate, reinspect, preferably by a trusted shop/mechanic that knows Fords pretty well.... and make sure that the seller is willing to take a deposit while giving you a week or 2 to have someone check the vehicle for issues.....this would be less of a concern if buying from a ford dealer, even so -
trust but verify !
C) If you can get an ESP for a reasonable price, it would probably be worth it, since major repairs on Expy's (or any car) can get real expensive real fast....most shops nowadays charge ~$175-300/hr
just for labor, regardless of the age of the vehicle or what needs to be done....
Last year, I took my 011 EL in for it's annual state inspection/emissions tests, and found out the right exhaust manifold was warped & leaking, which made it not pass the emissions test.... the only way to fix it was to cut the header, the bolt heads & studs off (lots of torch/drill/tap time), drill the holes out, and insert new studs before attaching the new header.....
Without my ESP, this would have been a ~$4K repair, but I only had to pay the $200 deductible
