I don’t want the roof basket so high and the cross bars are a bit weak…
Anyone install a rooftop cargo carrier to the roof using the mounting holes from the OEM roof rack system? I’m sure it would be a custom build….

I've not heard or seen anyone that did this. I do agree the factory crossbars leave a bit to be desired. Mine have spent most of their 20yr life in the attic, in fact used only twice. If you remove the factory roof rack rails make sure you seal up the holes and I would consider a sealant on the bolts as well, maybe something like Permatex Seal and Lock. The roof often develops some rust around the mounting holes.
