Normally IWE failure on these presents as clicking/popping in 2WD, and shifting to 4A or 4F resolves it.
I had the exact opposite, where 2wd was normal but in 4wd the failing side had a loud repeated clunking under acceleration. Turns out the IWE was being pulled into shape by vacuum under 2wd like it should, but the inner teeth were not fully engaging when vacuum was released. The white plastic retaining assembly was completely detached on the inside, apparently. It's a good thing I disengaged 4x4 until replaced, since there were metal shavings in the packing grease. Swapped out the left IWE actuator gear assembly and it's back to normal!
Just thought it might be useful for anyone in same situation.
