It's 10:30pm here in the UK and my 2004 Eddie Bauer just clunked when when I went into reverse - no more reverse. I managed to get home somewhere between 20mph and revving like crazy and hardly moving. When I started from a stop light the noise was a bit scary.

So my baby is out front - the clutch I guess is screwed. Given I took her from the USA to the UK does it sound like time to bury her and get something new?

She's my only vehicle so will be an interesting weekend!

I'm not so technical so wanted to ask you guys advice
thanks
Mike

Sounds like the transmission is shot. Not sure how much it would cost to rebuilt one of those over there.

Check trans fluid level first. Should be a nice pinkish/red color. If it is a brownish color and smells burnt it is time for a rebuild.

Driving it by revving in order to get it moving will just make matters worse, it will destroy parts in the transmission which otherwise could've been reused. You need to get the transmission rebuilt or just buy a remanufactured transmission. Not sure how easy it is to find a remanufactured transmission in the UK, but it is possible to order one from the US in worst case scenario. Price would be about 2000-2500 USD

Thanks folks - the transmission fluid is full and a nice pink colour.
The car is on the way to our American Car specialist though sounds like could be too expensive to fix. Hope not - I do love my Expedition.
Cheers

Well, depends on how much you're willing to spend and how good the rest of the truck is. If you're planning to keep it for a while and it's in good shape otherwise, then 2000-2500 USD including shipping (excl. tax) isn't too bad. Don't think you'll be able to buy a decent used car for that amount. :)
