Similar past experience, turned out to be two bad coil packs for me. Mine, sounded and felt like I lost a cylinder. It is common for these motors to suffer from coil packs after 100k miles.- Sloberdog

2001 5.4L Sounds like a diesel when cold
I have had the same issue for last 30K miles Mine does the same thing, nearly every time I start it. I had my mechanic finally look at it and he found it to be the exhaust manifold. Not going into reverse gear
Hello all, new to this forum. My 99 5.4 Expedition temporarily lost reverse gear last night. The reverse lights would light up, but nothing.
