    My 5.4L sounds like a diesel when I start it up in the morning and then quiets down when warm.I use Amsoil 5w-20.Is this why they call this engine the RAT 5.4?How about the white residue under the oil cap when it is cold,Is this normal?

    what brands of oil ???

    The best oil I have had 3 expos. 97-98 and now a 2001. All have had the 5.4. I use AMSOIL 5w-20. You can run it for 7500 miles,but I change mine at 5000.Never a motor problem other than ignitors..Check it out!
